City - Baltimore MD - A walk in the park 1906 Tile

Colourized photo from 1906 Original title: Looking north from Mt Vernon Pl Location: Mt Vernon & Washington Pl, Baltimore MD In early Baltimore a park was created right near where the first houses were built, it was called "The square" or "Mt Vernon place". Its not so much a square but four rectangles arranged like a cross, with The Washington Monument in the centre of it all. There are four parks, each looks different, featuring different statues. The park was originally designed in 1831, and over the years its changed. In 1850, they installed a large iron fence that surrounded each square. The north and south squares were redesigned in 1875 by a firm, the city liked them so much, they had the other two done in the same way. During that time they removed the fences and added stone walls at the entrances. Over time statues and fountains were added. Trees were always a theme in each variation. Around 1917 they installed a new statue to honour Marquis de Lafayette. After that they redid the park again, this time using a Beaux-Arts style, utilising marble and symmetry. This particular park is the North park, and we are looking down Charles St. Today the park is smaller and more narrow looking. You never would have guessed what it originally looked like, my guess that would be true over the years it was built.

My fiancé and I were happy when we received the tile. It’s Peru and was worth paying extra for expressing postage. Good quality and it is exactly like we wanted it. We are very pleased.
