Spring by the Seine / Springtime on the Ile de La Grande Jatte (Printemps à l'île de la Grande Jatte), 1878 - Claude Monet, oil on canvas. Claude Monet (Paris, 1840 - Giverny, 1926) was a French Impressionist painter. In the spring of 1878 Monet painted the waterside promenade on the Île de la Grande Jatte, an island northwest of Paris where the Impressionists were active. He looked across the Seine toward the Levallois bank, with a railway bridge toward Asnières glimpsed through the trees and gasworks chimneys in the distance, and he painted three similar versions of the motif. The work predates Seurat's famous treatment of the same island by several years. Fresh green foliage and a wide sky let Monet make spring light the unifying subject.
