The water lilies are an impression -- they're not supposed to be an exact replica of a real water lily. The lilies are green and purple, and there are two yellow flowers on them. The surge of colors are inspirational. Claude Monet was one of the great water lily painters -- perhaps the greatest artist of all time. He certainly painted lots of water lilies - but this painting is quite different, as it also features the agapanthus in the foreground.
