Clipper Ship Flying Cloud - Ship Blueprint BD Postcard

Clipper Ship Flying Cloud - Ship Blueprint BD Postcard

The illustration presents a detailed technical plan of the legendary American clipper ship Flying Cloud, one of the fastest sailing vessels of the 19th century. Built in 1851 by the renowned shipbuilder Donald McKay in East Boston, the vessel quickly became famous for its speed and elegant design. The drawing highlights the ship’s three tall masts and the complex web of rigging that supported an impressive spread of square sails, a hallmark of clipper ships built for maximum speed. Owned by the New York shipping firm Grinnell, Minturn & Co., the Flying Cloud was designed primarily for long-distance trade routes. Clippers like this were engineered with narrow hulls and towering masts to capture as much wind as possible, allowing them to outrun most other merchant ships of their time. The plan view emphasizes the structural layout of the hull, spars, yards, and rigging, revealing the careful balance of engineering that made such speed possible. The ship gained international fame after setting a remarkable sailing record between New York City and San Francisco during the California Gold Rush era. In 1854, it completed the journey in only 89 days and 8 hours, an extraordinary feat for a sailing vessel travelling around Cape Horn. This record stood for decades and cemented the ship’s reputation as one of the fastest clippers ever built. With a length of about 225 feet and a tonnage of roughly 1,782 tons, the Flying Cloud represented the peak of American clipper ship design. This schematic-style artwork captures not only the vessel’s proportions but also the intricate craftsmanship that defined the golden age of wind-powered ocean trade.

Such a huge range of different frogs available, which made my choices very difficult and now the reason I have a whole draw full of cards and postcards! Much better quality than you can buy in the shops and they are exactly on the subject I love and adore too.
