Clipper Ship The Helen Pembroke at sea circa 1870
Helen Pembroke was a clipper ship built in the mid-19th century. Clipper ships were fast sailing ships with narrow hulls and large sails. Starboard broadside view of the clipper Helen Pembroke. In the distance a view of another vessel with five smaller ones further in the distance with two are funnelled steamers side by side. The period of clipper ships lasted from the early 1840s to the early 1890s. At the 'crest of the clipper wave' year of 1852, there were 200 clippers rounding Cape Horn. Up to 400 clipper ships were built, between 1840s to the early 1890 The only intact survivor is Cutty Sark, which was preserved as a museum ship in 1954 at Greenwich.
