Colosseum or Flavian Amphitheatre in Rome Italy Postcard

This postcard features the Colosseum (otherwise known as the Flavian Amphitheatre) in Rome, Italy. It is built of tavertine, tuff and brick-face concrete and is situated east of the Roman Forum. Under the emperor, Vespasian, construction began in 72 AD and was completed in 80 AD under his successor and heir, Titus. The Colosseum could hold between 50K-80K spectators but averaged about 65K. It was used for gladiatorial contests and other public spectacles but soon changed to support other activities such as animal hunts, executions etc. It stopped being used for entertainment in the mediaeval era. Later, it was used for workshops, housing, quarters for a religious order, a fortress, a quarry and a Christian shrine.
