Edmond Dantes was framed for treason and sent to France's worst prison, the Chateau d'If. A fellow prisoner took Edmond under his wing, helped the young man improve, and then showed him how to escape before succumbing to old age. Edmond escaped and claimed a vast treasure his fellow prisoner had hidden. Edmond then returned to France as the Count of Monte Cristo to reward the just and punish those responsible for his imprisonment.
