Cranes by Hokusai Tie
Near Umezawa in Sagami Province by Katsushika Hokusai (1760 1849). There are five cranes in the foreground in the marsh feeding and preening while two other cranes are in flight parallel to Mount Fuji. Mount Fuji is a strong spiritual symbol in Japan while Cranes are very popular and often symbolise a wish for longevity as well as good fortune and health. The bird was once widespread throughout Japan but had dwindled to a handful in the last century. This painting is from 36 Views of Mount Fuji.
