Cumberland Falls Kentucky Magnet

Cumberland Falls, often referred to as the 'Niagara of the South,' is a major waterfall on the Cumberland River in southeastern Kentucky. It is approximately 68 feet (21 m) high and 125 feet (38 m) wide, making it one of the largest waterfalls in the eastern United States. The falls are the central feature of Cumberland Falls State Resort Park and are famous for being one of the few places in the Western Hemisphere to consistently produce a 'moonbow' (or lunar rainbow) during a full moon. This rare phenomenon attracts night photographers and stargazers. The rugged beauty of the surrounding Daniel Boone National Forest makes it a year-round destination for hiking, fishing, and outdoor recreation. The park offers numerous viewing platforms and hiking trails that provide dramatic perspectives of the powerful cascade. The area is steeped in history and natural splendour, with the river carving a deep gorge through the sandstone landscape. At night, the absence of light pollution near the falls makes it an ideal spot for viewing the night sky and, with the right conditions and a bright moon, the elusive moonbow appearing in the mist generated by the waterfall. The powerful rush of the water provides a continuous, dramatic soundtrack to the nocturnal experience.
