Dachigam National Park India Postcard

Dachigam National Park, located just 22 kilometres from Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir, is a spectacular alpine sanctuary nestled within the western Himalayas. The park's name literally translates to 'ten villages,' commemorating the communities that were relocated to establish this protected area in the early 20th century. Ranging from gentle glasslands to rugged rocky cliffs, Dachigam is globally renowned as the last remaining refuge for the critically endangered Hangul, or Kashmir stag, a magnificent species of deer tightly intertwined with the region's conservation efforts. The park is divided into Lower and Upper Dachigam, presenting a stunning variation in terrain and biodiversity. Lower Dachigam features deep coniferous forests of pine and deodar, flowing trout streams like the Dagwan River, and vibrant alpine meadows that burst into colour during the spring and summer. As the altitude rises into Upper Dachigam, the landscape transforms into harsh, dramatic rocky outcrops and snow-dusted peaks, providing a sanctuary not only for the Hangul but also for Himalayan black bears, leopards, and an extraordinary variety of migratory birds.
