Death and the Boxer postcard: This is one of a series of vintage art/ Illustrations from: The English Dance of Death book published in 1816, art by Thomas Rowlandson, poetry, by William Combe circa 1815. Here you have Death and a Boxer squaring off over the prone form of another fighter out in the open with a riot or battle going on in the background. The Dance of Death, or Danse Macabre art/ genre stylised Deaths approach of people of all stations and walks of life, reaffirming that Death is the great leveler/equalizer. They were produced as an artistic genre of religious works from the 1400s thru the 1800s, period to remind people of the fragility of their lives and how vain are the glories/pleasures of earthly life
