Dessau, DDR, Dessau, Germany. Dessau is a district of the independent city of Dessau-Roßlau in Saxony-Anhalt at the junction of the rivers Mulde and Elbe, in the Bundesland (Federal State) of Saxony-Anhalt. Until July 1, 2007, Dessau was an independent city. The south of Dessau borders a wooded area called Mosigkauer Heide. The highest elevation is the 110-metre-high former rubbish dump called Scherbelberg in the southwest of Dessau. Dessau is surrounded by many parks and palaces, making it one of the greenest towns in Germany. The town was almost completely destroyed by Allied air raids in World War II. Afterwards, it was rebuilt with concrete slab architecture (Plattenbau) which was familiar in East Germany. Dessau became an important industrial centre of the DDR. Since German reunification in 1990, many of Dessau's historic buildings have been rehabilitated.
