The USS Maine (ACR-1) was an armoured cruiser and became a symbol of American naval power and national tragedy in the late 19th century. The ship was commissioned in 1895, and it was one of the first steel-hulled warships built for the United States. The Maine was sent to Havana, Cuba, during a period of increased tensions between the United States and Spain, primarily due to the Cuban War of Independence. On February 15, 1898, a massive explosion ripped through the ship while it was anchored in Havana Harbour, leading to the sinking of the USS Maine. The explosion resulted in the deaths of 260 crew members and marked a significant catalyst for the Spanish-American War.
