Dinoflagellates are unicellular organisms with whip-like organelles. They're a varied bunch, but the specific dinoflagellate inspiring this image is Ceratium hirundinella.
Our dino is a unique composite creature. The dinosaur component is inspired by a pterosaur, specifically the Quetzalcoatlus northropi, though some artistic liberties were taken to integrate it with the Ceratium.
The "dino" in dinoflagellate actually comes from the Greek "dinos," meaning "whirling." Thus dinoflagellate literally means "whirling whip."
