This dynamic Baroque oil sketch by Peter Paul Rubens, created around 1634–35, features Don Ferdinand (the Cardinal-Infante Ferdinand of Spain) as a central equestrian figure in a tumultuous allegorical battle scene. The composition is charged with dramatic movement: Don Ferdinand, clad in armour and a red cloak, leads the Catholic forces on a rearing white horse, symbolising valour and leadership. At the heart of the conflict, a female allegorical figure representing Catholic Austria is beset by adversaries, while angels descend from above, signifying divine support. The swirling mass of soldiers, banners, and fallen figures conveys the chaos and intensity of the Thirty Years’ War, a subject Rubens often addressed in his political and historical commissions. This work exemplifies Rubens’s mastery of allegory, theatrical composition, and expressive brushwork, and it reflects the artist’s engagement with contemporary European power struggles.
