It shows the loggia (outdoor corridor) of the ducal palace in Venice, residence of the city-state's Doge; Saint Mark's Basilica is visible in the distance. John Ruskin was one of the most important and influential figures in nineteenth-century art, and he had a lasting love for Venice; he produced a lengthy study of its history and architecture titled "The Stones of Venice".
