The Durrës Amphitheatre is one of the grandest Roman monuments in the entire Balkan region, dating back to the 2nd century AD. Discovered almost by accident in the 1960s, this massive structure once held up to 20,000 spectators who gathered to watch gladiatorial combats. Today, the ancient stone tiers sit uniquely integrated into the modern fabric of the coastal city, surrounded by colourful houses. Below the stone seating lies a hidden gem: an early Christian chapel adorned with rare, beautiful mosaics, capturing a fascinating overlap of pagan and Byzantine history.
