Dutch East Indies Company Floating Sculpture Tile
Now you too can, own a piece of 400 year old history popping out of your stuff! The Dutch East Indies Company (V.O. Compagnie, or VOC) was formed in the 1600's and colonised Indonesia. The Netherlands held it for the next 400+ years until WWII. The VOC, and The Netherlands in turn, was a world power. This sculpture stll adorns the original entrance to the former Dutch East Indies Company entance. The image here has been retouched with a slightly worn version of what I think the original colours were without changing its existing flaws, poor mortar and plaster repairs, and hopefully brought it back to life. The colours were chosen from paintings of that time, and modified for what a company logo would look like...with the tricolors brighter than under the clouds of battle and the seas unusually blue, the orange of the flag leaning into red for higher visibility. Nothing was repainted, only retinted. The supporting morter around the frame that "holds" it in place with subtle shadowing and perspective giving it an almost 3D look to whatever it's on. I hope you enjoy the finished product as much as I making it.
The Dutch East Indies Company (V.O. Compagnie, or VOC) was formed in the 1600's and colonised Indonesia. The Netherlands held it for the next 400+ years until WWII. The VOC, and The Netherlands in turn, was a world power, eventually adding a West Indies company as well.
This sculpture stll adorns the original entrance to the former Dutch East Indies Company entance. Damage at one point brought the two halves down, and in a feat of bizarre restoration, the two halves were restored in swapped order. As time went by, art preservationists advised against repairing the issue due to the fragile nature of the sculpture. Other than careful reinforcement to the plaster holding it in the "frame" and two the wall, no further restoration has been done0
Instead, I've retouched the photo with a slightly worn version of what I think the original colours were without changing its existing flaws, poor plastering repairs, and hopefully brought it back to life. The colours were chosen from paintings of that time, and modified for what a company logo would look like...with the tricolors brighter than under the clouds of battle and the seas unusually blue. Nothing was repainted, only retinted.
The supporting plastering around the frame "holds" it in place on the tile or whatever its on, with subtle shadowing and perspective giving it a 3D look.
I hope you enjoy the finished product as much as I spent the few days correcting perspectives, upscaling, correcting gamma, brightess, hue, research, tinting, fending my helpful cat off, and more. ;-)

My fiancé and I were happy when we received the tile. It’s Peru and was worth paying extra for expressing postage. Good quality and it is exactly like we wanted it. We are very pleased.

Just perfect for my needs. I want to use it in my garden as a little memorial to my Nana whose name was Iris :). Printing is just great :)
