Edgar Degas - Dancers in pink Tile

Dancers in Pink / Ballerinas in Pink (Danseuses en rose), painted around 1876 in oil on canvas by French Impressionist painter Edgar Degas. A group of ballerinas in pink costumes is arranged across the rehearsal or backstage space, with figures turning, waiting and adjusting themselves rather than presenting a single coordinated performance. Degas uses repeated colours and cropped bodies to connect the dancers into a visual rhythm while preserving the sense of individual, incidental gestures. The composition reflects his shift in the 1870s from formal portraiture and history painting towards the working life of the Paris ballet. As in many of his dance pictures, the apparent immediacy is carefully constructed through changes of pose, spacing and viewpoint.
