Edgar Degas - Waiting Doormat
Waiting (L'Attente), made around 1879-1882 in pastel on beige laid paper by French Impressionist painter Edgar Degas. A young dancer sits hunched forward beside a second woman, often read as a chaperone, both figures absorbed in stillness rather than performance. The steep angle, cropped floor and sharp contrasts make the backstage moment feel immediate but leave the exact narrative deliberately unresolved. Degas focuses on fatigue, anticipation and the physical routine surrounding ballet, subjects that interested him as much as dance itself. The scene may also evoke the formal examinations that affected a dancer's salary and rank at the Paris Opéra. The paired figures create a striking counterpoint between the decorated costume of the dancer and the dark street clothes of the woman beside her.
