British MP and political philosopher Edmund Burke was the voice of liberty and reasoned conservatism. He was never one for trading what worked for something that sounded good. He was very sympathetic to the aims of the Americans revolutionaries. This is what he said about well intentioned people needing to work together to fight evil: "When bad men combine, the good must associate; else they will fall one by one, an unpitied sacrifice in a contemptible struggle." Burke's portrait was painted by his personal friend, great English artist Thomas Gainsborough.
