Mrs. W. K. Vanderbilt’s fancy dress ball was the social event in N.Y.C during the spring of 1883. This image was taken just prior to her ball, and the torch did indeed light up, thanks to batteries hidden in the dress.This costume, and the ball itself, actually changed New York society's social hierarchy forever. It was after all, the grandest ball of all time as far as the party goers were concerned.
