About This Design
Emperor Charles V on Horseback (by Titian) Doormat
This design features a painting by the Italian Renaissance painter Titian (1488–1576), who is often considered the most important member of the 16th-century Venetian school. It depicts Emperor Charles V, the Holy Roman Emperor, on horseback at the Battle of Mühlberg that took place in 1547 during the Schmalkaldic War. The fighting occured within central Europe, in the region of modern-day Germany. Charles V is holding a lance and he is wearing a full suit of armour, including a helmet, as he rides his black horse into battle. The horse is wearing an elegant red coat made of opulent fabrics. The original artwork was painted by Titian in 1548, and it is now housed in the Prado Museum in Madrid, Spain.
