Emu Dreaming In the Dreaming there were many families of Emus living in the centre of the Great Desert. The mother Emus looked after the chicks while the Father Emus spent all day looking for food . The males would return with small amounts of food that barely went around. One night the male Emus got together and complained to each other that it wasn’t fair that they spent all day collecting food, while the females did nothing all day but sit on the nests. Meanwhile the female Emus got together to talk about how sick they were of the whining of the males and how they bring back very little to eat, and that they could be far better hunters. The Great Father Spirit Baiame was listening to all this and to get their attention he sent an almighty lightening strike across the sky. Baiame told the Emus that from this day on the males would stay and look after the young and the females would go in search of food and if any of them complained he would strike them down with one of his lightening bolts. Today it is still the male Emu that sits on the nest and looks after the chicks, while the females bring back the food. The male Emus never complain about their jobs because they are always far too busy.
