The Duke is shown mounted on a white horse, wearing partial armour and holding a general’s staff, symbolising his military authority. The scallop shell of the Knights of Saint James is visible at his neck, emphasizing his noble status. The painting features a dramatic cavalry battle in the background, reinforcing the Duke’s role as chief of the Spanish armies.
Rubens based the composition on Titian’s Portrait of Charles V at Mühlberg, but innovated by depicting the Duke facing forward, advancing towards the viewer, which creates a dynamic Baroque effect. A palm tree frames the figure, adding to the grandeur and verticality of the composition. The painting vividly conveys the Duke’s pride, power, and political prominence during his tenure.
