ESL T Shirt Negative Contractions With Not List
Do you know what ESL stands for? If you're in the TESOL field, you do. E is for English. S is for Second. And L is for Language. The words "as a" aren't included in the acronym. Here's another question: do you own any ESL t shirts? It's unlikely that you do. But that's OK. Have you ever thought about buying one? Did you think about it just now? If so, that's good. Whether you're an English as a Second Language teacher or student, you know that acquiring a new language isn't a piece of cake. That's clear. Many, many new things have to be learned by heart in order to become proficient. You also know that you're always in search of new ideas to make the language learning process more effective. So to you, clothing that teaches someone how to learn English grammar is certainly interesting. Right? No matter how goofy a grammar getup may seem, educators are always in need of unique and helpful resources to add to their ESL teaching materials. And their pupils are always in need of instruction that makes grammatical concepts easy to understand. Out of all the things that have to be taught in a class, what are the most essential things? Are contractions one of them? You may feel inclined to ask this question: why is it important to teach contractions in the classroom? Well, the answer is that they show up so frequently in everyday English that not knowing them well will hinder a student's language acquisition progress. But you may ask another question: won't students simply absorb these instance of verbs + the word not? Though that's possible, experienced ESL teachers know that acquiring a knowledge of where to put the apostrophe in negative contractions and which letter to omit is hard. So how do you introduce contractions? Can an outlandish outfit be a benefit? Why not? Appealing linguistic attire may be a snazzy way to reinforce an abstract topic. Take a look at this shirt. On its front is a negative contractions list arranged in neat boxes. Now, at first, that seems unspectacular. Books, worksheets, and handouts have those same words. For a long time, those resources have been used to show learners what they need to memorise and guide them through the challenges of memorisation. In fact, as anyone who has been in an English as a Second Language classroom knows, lists galore are normally used for concepts that are hard to grasp. And they're especially used in teaching contractions to ESL students. But wait. There's one big difference between those methods and this shirt. Do you know what that is? The location of the information. Have you ever seen the contractions in negative forms on a t shirt? Probably not. That's an advantage. And that's exactly what this ESL t shirt has. The novelty of seeing lacklustre information in a new place is key. It's memorable. For example, even if you pass up this shirt and pick some other grammar shirt, you'll remember it. And being memorable is important. The truth is that teaching contractions is an important but challenging part of helping learners to become competent in the speaking, listening, reading, and writing of the English language. Is that still surprising? It's necessary to keep in mind that not all languages contract sentences in the negative form. So both the forms and the concept of having to deal with contracted words are unfamiliar. Though only an apostrophe and a missing N are involved in the negative verb contractions, problems arise for non-native speakers of English. But they aren’t alone. Problems arise for native speakers too. Why? Consider how tricky and easy to mix up some of these forms can be. Here's a contractions words list for eight kinds of common contractions with not: (1) For the verb to be: aren't, isn't, wasn't, weren't (There are a few things that need an explanation when you encounter this set of words. The linking verb "am" is missing. Notice that among the negative contractions of the verb to be, there isn't an example that contracts I + am. At least there isn't one in formal English. But in informal English, though some linguistic commentators feel that it goes against the rules of language, many people use the idiomatic "ain't." That's something noteworthy about to be contractions.) (2) For the verb can: can't (3) For the verb could: couldn't (4) For the verb to do: don't, doesn't, didn't (5) For the verb to have: haven't, hasn't, hadn't (6) For the verb should: shouldn't (7) For the verb will: won't (Notice that the vowel changes.) (8) For the verb would: wouldn't. Those are the common words that come about in the course of making contractions negative. There are a few other words that are uncommon in American English but may be more common in other varieties of spoken and/or written English. These aren't on the ESL t shirt: (1) For the verb must: mustn't (2) For the verb shall: shan't. At any rate, correctly contracting not and the aforementioned words is a tall order for some second-language learners. The bottom line is this: if you're the instructor, how do you teach contractions to ESL students? Rote memorisation? Few people are fond of that. Is there another way besides that? It's already been mentioned that ESL worksheets and other similar teaching resources are often employed to demonstrate and explain the negative forms and make committing the words to memory less arduous. But that kind of practice isn't a lot of fun. In fact, a contractions list or even an English contractions chart may be intimidating as well as unexciting. So how do you teach the negative form to your students? After all, they need to have the variations down pat. It's a given that figuring out how to teach contractions will take some work. And looking for activities for teaching negative sentences will take some work too. When all that work is done, will it be possible to make studying enjoyable? Who knows? But perhaps ESL t shirts may come in handy for doing that. How? Well, seeing the linguistic information in an unexpected place may be memorable. A widely known trick for memorisation is to connect something difficult to remember with something unusual or silly to make it more memorable. This shirt, unlike others ESL teacher t shirts that simply have funny sayings on them, may provide that experience. The arrangement of colourful boxes offers the facts that students need to commit to memory in a pleasant manner. It's also distinctive enough to pique a viewer's curiosity. Did it pique your curiosity when you saw it for the first time? And when all is said and done, even if only one of the verb + not combinations finally sinks in for a student after seeing the shirt's arrangement, won't that be worth it? That's up to you. Needless to say, unlike some of the other shirts for ESL teachers that are applicable only to them, both the teacher and student can wear this shirt. If you're a teacher, your students may like it and want to wear one too. And if you're a student, other students may learn from you. So if you want an ESL t shirt with the negative contractions made with not, this one may be right for you.
