Expedition 11-a dream comes true
This patch was the realisation of my dream to design a mission patch that would fly into space. I started writing astronauts in 1973, offering to design their mission patch. There were a couple of opportunities, but those missions were cancelled.
John Phillips finally accepted my offer in 2004. Over a six month period, the design went through various revisions from sketch to final design. The final design represents Sergei Krikalev and John Phillips flying together, each represented by the number one and their respective flag styled contrail. Krikalev’s contrail forms a stylised Greek letter alpha; a tribute to him being a member of the first crew to the ISS where the crew requested that the station call sign be designated “Alpha.”
The landscape of the Earth has no recognisable features per crew request. Stars are frequently added to a design with specific meaning, but in this case, the crew just liked the way the fifteen stars looked. The outer gold border and inner blue border were deliberately used to resemble the Apollo 11 patch – a patch that was influential in my childhood. The colour scheme worked and the crew liked it.
The official description:
The emblem of the eleventh expedition to the International Space Station (ISS) emphasizes the roles of the United States and the Russian Federation in the multinational ISS partnership.
The two rocket plumes, in the style of the flags of these two nations, represent the Russian Soyuz vehicles and the American Space Shuttles. The ISS image shows the configuration of the orbiting Station at the start of the expedition, with docked Soyuz and Progress vehicles and the huge American solar panels.
The names of the two crew members are shown on the margin of the patch. ISS Commander Sergei Krikalev and John Phillips, NASA ISS science officer and flight engineer, are expected to launch on a Soyuz vehicle and to be in orbit during the return to flight of the Space Shuttle.
The crew explains, “The beauty of our home planet and the vivid contrasts of the space environment are shown by the blue and green Earth with the Space Station orbiting overhead, and by the bright stars, dark sky, and dazzling sun.”

I found the shirt quality itself to be well made. Unfortunately I found that the image quality of the artwork is low resoultion. So the art and words aren't as clear. I probably wont buy another shirt to be honest, but I'm glad I supported the podcast of which I'm a fan of. I was just hoping that for the price I paid, it would have been of better quality.
