The 11 remaining cylinder-shaped towers along the Delaware coastline have been recognisable landmarks since they were built during World War II. They were the watch towers that served as "eyes" for the gun batteries at Fort Miles and directed those guns to fire on enemy ships - hence the name "Fire Control Towers."
