The family crest of Yoshida Shoin (Drawn on 2013/5/6). Shoin tried to stow away on Perry's second expedition to Shimoda and got caught. When an American officer asked him his name, he allegedly gave the alias 'Urinaka Manji'. This is a play on the popular name of this crest design, 'Manji inside a gourd', and refers to Shoin's family crest. (Reference: '100 Stories about Family Crests (Part 2)' by Niwa Motoji) There are various theories about Shoin's alias; others include Kanouchi Manji and Kuwanou Manji.
