This design features the national flag of Malta (officially the Republic of Malta and formerly known as Melita), is a Southern European island country consisting of an archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea, south of Sicily. The official and national language of Malta is Maltese, which is descended from Sicilian Arabic that developed during the Emirate of Sicily, while English serves as the second official language. Malta is one of the smallest and most densely populated countries in the world. The capital of Malta is Valletta; other cities in the country are Qormi, Żabbar, Żebbuġ, Żejtun, Siġġiewi, Rabat, Bormla, Senglea, Birgu and Mdina. The flag of Malta is a bicolour with white in the hoist and red in the fly; it includes a representation of the George Cross that was awarded to Malta by George VI in 1942.
