Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León named the region "la Florida", which means "the Land of Flowers", upon landing there in 1513. Florida is often known as the "Sunshine State". The capital city of Florida is Tallahassee, while the most populous city in the state is Jacksonville. Other major cities in Florida include Miami, Tampa, Orlando, St. Petersburg, Hialeah, Port St. Lucie, Cape Coral, Fort Lauderdale, Pembroke Pines, Hollywood, Miramar, Gainesville, Coral Springs, Clearwater, Palm Bay, Miami Gardens, Pompano Beach and West Palm Beach.
