Franz M. Melchers' The Year Calendar

In 1897, Franz M.Melchers made a series of prints for Thomas Braun's cycle of poems called "The Year". The prints were profoundly influenced by his study of Japanese woodblocks and the Dutch Masters, yet also echoed the Post-Impressionism of Van Gogh. The result is a series of portraits of a year in pre-War Flanders quite unlike any other. The original cycle had interleaved poems for the seasons and months. We have taken the prints for the months and used them to head the calendar pages, while we have made a composite of the seasonal prints for the front cover. Celebrate the procession of the year in the company of this truly extraordinary artist, once praised by Maeterlinck and exhibited in Estampes Modernes, yet now somehow overlooked.
