soul of Bicol told in ink.
The left panel opens on the ruins of
Cagsawa — the volcanic stone bell tower
swallowed by cogon grass and fern, a lone
figure in salakot hat standing before
the weight of history. The centre panel
breathes open into the Bicol lowland
plain, a farmer and carabao working
the rice paddies beneath the perfect
symmetrical cone of Mayon — the most
beautiful and most dangerous mountain
in the Philippines. The right panel
resolves on the Albay Gulf, bangka
fishing boats on still water, coconut
palms leaning towards the open sea.
Ruins. Land. Sea. The complete arc
of the Bicolano story rendered in
authentic sumi-e ink wash with a
continuous indigenous Filipino
geometric border in warm gold
across the top and the volcanic
cone of Mayon flowing as one
unbroken mountain through
all three panels.
For every Bicolano who carries
these landscapes in their chest
wherever they go.
