"General Leavenworth Marker, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas" by Catherine Sherman. A 12-foot tall granite column topped with an eagle marks the grave of Brigadier General Henry Leavenworth, who founded Fort Leavenworth in 1827. General Leavenworth's grave is in section 2 of Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery, which was established in 1862 on the grounds of the Fort Leavenworth Military Reservation. The cemetery, one of the oldest national cemeteries, retains many of its historic features, including portions of the stone perimeter wall dating to 1869 and the superintendent’s lodge from 1905.
