【Genjiguruma】The wheel crest is said to have been around since ancient times. It appears in written records in "The Chronicles of Japan," and it seems to have been used by the emperor. In the Nara period, cargo carts were created, and these were used by common people. They are often depicted in emakimono (picture scrolls), and the gyuusha (ox carts) pulled by cattle were frequently seen in the Heian period, particularly among the nobility. The design of the wheel crest is based on these ox carts. The wheel crest became established as a family crest at the beginning of the Kamakura period. The wheel crest has been known as the Genji-guruma crest since before the Edo period. Genji-guruma refers to the imperial carriage that appears frequently in "The Tale of Genji" picture scroll. Other types of wheel crests include water wheels and windmills, but Genji-guruma is by far the most common, and when people think of a wheel crest, they usually think of Genji-guruma.
