It shows George Washington's crossing of the Delaware River, which occurred on the night of December 25–26, 1776, during the American Revolutionary War. It was a major event that ultimately led to the achievement of American independence from the British Crown, establishing the United States of America as the first modern constitutional liberal democracy.
