George Washington's Liberty Key Cup

George Washington's Liberty Key (Mount Vernon's Bastille Key) is emblazoned on a copy in reverse image along with quotations and signatures from Lafayette and Washington. Quotations include introductory letter/message from Lafayette to George Washington and George Washington's thank-you letter. Includes signatures of both Lafayette and Washington. The Key to the Bastille was sent to George Washington by the Marquis de Lafayette with the following words (17 March 1790): "Give me leave, my dear General, to present you with the main key to the Bastille...the fortress of despotism. It is a tribute which I owe as a son to my adoptive father, as an aid de camp to my general, as a missionary of liberty to its patriarch." Lafayette "My dear Marquis, I have received your affectionate letter of the 17 of March by one conveyance, and the token of victory gained by Liberty over Despotism by another:1 for both which testimonials of your friendship and regard I pray you to accept my sincerest thanks."
