The Berlin subway, together with the S-Bahn and the metro lines by tram and bus, forms the backbone of public transport (public transport) in Berlin. Opened in 1902 as a high and underground railway, the metro is now extended to a network of four small and five large-profile lines with 175 railway stations and a total length of 155.4 kilometers operated by the Berlin transport companies (BVG). 1272 vehicles are used. In 2021, 22.3 million commercial train kilometers were traveled on regular services. The Berlin Metro has the largest underground network in the German-speaking area, measured by the length of the line and the number of stations.
