A discarded shell... this translucent brown exoskeleton was discarded by a cicada nymph. Despite the fearsome claws, it is actually harmless as it sucks the sap from tree roots! The adults aren't so harmless though... one of them once stabbed me with its proboscis! There are some estimated twenty eight native Cicada species in New Zealand, under the Genus Kikihia
