Giant isopods grow to a length between 7.5 and 15 in, and reach weights of up to 3.7 lbs. Giant isopods are a good example of deep-sea gigantism. Their bodies are protected by a rigid, calcareous exoskeleton composed of imbricate segments. They also possess the ability to curl up into a ball, where only the tough shell is exposed. The large eyes are compound with nearly 4,000 facets. There are two pairs of antennae.
