Giant Magnolias on a Blue Velvet Cloth by MJ Heade

Giant Magnolias on a Blue Velvet Cloth by MJ Heade

Giant Magnolias on a Blue Velvet Cloth (c. 1890) by Martin Johnson Heade is a vintage fine art Victorian Era floral still life painting. A large blooming white magnolia flower blossom in full bloom on a tree branch with leaves from the garden. About the artist: Martin Johnson Heade (1819-1904) was a prolific American painter during the Victorian Era known for his salt marsh landscapes, seascapes, tropical birds, lotus blossoms and other still lifes. His painting style was derived from the romanticism of the time. A deep reverence for nature attracted him to the Luminist school of painting. Luminism, in its concern with the effect of light, is now seen as a precursor of Impressionism.
