Gion, Kyoto Japan Postcard

Gion is Kyoto's most famous geisha district, located around Shijo Avenue between Yasaka Shrine in the east and the Kamo River in the west. It is filled with shops, restaurants, and ochaya (teahouses), where geiko (Kyoto dialect for geisha) and maiko (geiko apprentices) entertain. The area boasts beautiful traditional wooden machiya townhouses, many of which are designated as historic preservation districts. Walking through Gion, especially in the evening, feels like stepping back into an old-world Japanese atmosphere. Gion Corner is a popular spot to experience traditional Japanese arts, including tea ceremony and puppet theatre. While Gion is synonymous with geisha, it's also famous for the Yasaka Pagoda, part of the Hokan-ji Temple, which dominates the district's skyline. This 15th-century pagoda is an iconic symbol of Kyoto and is beautifully illuminated at night, adding to the historic charm. The surrounding narrow streets, like Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka, offer stunning views of the pagoda and are lined with traditional buildings, making it a perfect spot to soak in the essence of old Japan.
