Did you know? Cheer-leading first started in the 1880s in the United States? It was actually men-not women-who first led the crowds in cheers!? In the 1920s, women started to become more involved with cheering, but they did not take over until World War II, when most young men were fighting. At that time, cheering was limited to leading cheers for the crowd and doing a few simple dance steps with pom poms. The girls wore ankle-length skirts and varsity sweaters. The cheerleaders were normally the most popular girls in school because they were voted onto the squad, rather than having to try out.
