Dr. Constancia Ayres from Fiocruz in Brazil and Dr. Fiona Hunter from Brock University in Canada have confirmed ZIKV (Zika virus) in the salivary glands of Culex quinquefasciatus (aka the southern house mosquito) and Culex p. pipiens (aka the northern house mosquito). In fact, 11 out of 50 wild-caught Culex p. pipiens mosquitoes picked up the virus somewhere on their bodies. I was shocked at the global reach of these mosquitoes and felt it was useful to superimpose their distribution range over the public domain image of the predicted distribution of Aedes aegypti in 2015. Note: The mosquito ranges are approximate (I drew them by hand using Pixlr on October 13th, 2016). P.S. I will contribute 20 percent of my royalties from every sale of this mug in support of Zika research.
