The Gorgons in Greek mythology, are three female monsters, Stheno, Euryale, and Medusa, sisters who were able to turn anyone who looked at them to stone. In ancient Greece a Gorgoneion (a stone head, engraving, or drawing of a Gorgon face) frequently was used as an apotropaic symbol and placed on doors, walls, coins, shields, etc. in the hopes of warding off evil.
