Grand Canyon River 2989 Black Poster

South Rim of the Grand Canyon in winter. View from Mohave Point (6,800 ft high) of the Colorado River that started carving the canyon 5 or 6 million years ago. The black rock layer at river level includes Vishnu Basement Rocks formed when the North American tectonic plate collided with another tectonic plate. This created heat and pressure that melted the rock into dark metamorphic rock squeezing it up through cracks in the earth to become the basement of the Grand Canyon.
