Medusa is typically described as a beautiful woman in her earlier life. However, after she incurred the wrath of the goddess Athena, her hair was transformed into snakes, and she became a horrifying Gorgon with a gaze that could petrify anyone who looked directly at her. Medusa was one of the Gorgons, three sisters born to Phorcys and Ceto, who were sea deities. The other two Gorgons were Stheno and Euryale, and they were also known for their monstrous appearances.
