The painting uses a brilliant palette of blues, greens, greys, and oranges to create a beautiful, calm view of the unique square lighthouse tower and lightkeeper’s house. The working lighthouse, erected in 1874, warns sailors to steer clear of the rocky shallows between Gilkey Harbour and West Penobscot Bay. Colourful orange, white, and blue stones shine in the foreground, a testament to the Maine island's rough coastline. Situated to the left of the lighthouse, a 1,000-pound hand-rung warning bell reflects the deep blue of the water and slate-grey rocks below.
