    Hannya (般若の面) large coffee mug

    Hannya (般若の面) is used in many Japanese plays of theatres but also kyogen, as well as in Shinto ritual dances of Kagura. The mask depicts the soul of a woman who has become a demon because of obsession or jealousy. The spirit of a woman, abandoned by her lover for another or deceived by him, comes in this form for revenge to her rival. Among the performances in which the mask is found, the most famous are “Aoi-no-Ue” (上) and “Dojoji” (道 成 寺); Hannya’s eye-catching and frightening appearance makes her one of the most recognisable masks of the Noh theatre. Hannya comes in different colours: a white mask indicates a woman of an aristocratic position.

    Purchase of the 7th Cavalry Mug was a last minute addition to my purchases and I am really pleased I acquired the Mug. The one I purchased was a "large" but wow, it is large - Extremely well made and just to Mug to put down at a coffee time with a bunch of mates. Early days, but the colours and motifs (there are two) withstand the washing and look great.
