The winter solstice (around Dec. 21-23) marks the end of astronomical winter because tonne Dec 25 the days start becoming longer with the promise of sunny days and the end of starvation due to the bitter cold. No wonder ancient cultures worshipped the sun as a god who was (re) born on or about December 25, with his promise of bringing "light and replenishment". After thousands of years, this joyous day still commemorates the "birth" of our sun—not a son—which is the true origin of Christmas.
